Anna is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and educator. She was born in Bristol and has lived in many places in the UK, gradually weaving a path further Northwards to a found home in the North East of England. This transitory life, steeped in shifting environments and cultural tapestries, finds a powerful reflection in her music, taking influence from forgotten landscapes of her childhood, traditional music and stories, literature and the natural world.

Anna holds a BA in Folk and Traditional Music from Newcastle University, including a year at The Sibelius Academy, and an MA in Music Production and Audio Cultures from The University of York.

As an Artist in Residence at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music (2022-2023), Anna created her latest project, Fell Silent, a collaboration with filmmaker Alex Ayre, using surround sound, field recordings, location filming, string quartet textures and song to create an imagined representation of wildness, of questioning what it is to search for connection between the human and non-human, if that is possible, and the powerful mark it can leave on us.

Notable collaborations include her work with critically acclaimed alt-folk trio Salt House, song-based duo Watersmeet, composer/pianist Benjamin Fitzgerald’s genre-bending ensemble Sømnus, and traditional singer Holly Clarke. She also writes music for theatre and interdisciplinary commissions.

Her sound design for In Tandem Theatre Company’s A Great Fear of Shallow Living premiered at Edinburgh Fringe, 2017, where it was the winner of the Infallibles Award. This has led to a long term collaboration with writer, actor and Anna’s sister, Isobel Hughes. A Place to Fall to Pieces, their first project together, was selected by Mahogany Opera as one of five operas internationally to take part in their Various Stages Festival 2020, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and has since been supported by The Glasshouse International Centre for Music and Arts Council England.

Anna’s most recent commission was for choreographer Beth Veitch’s Waiting on It, a series of short dance films and North East tour with Anthony Lo Giudice's ROMA. This was supported by Dance City and Arts Council England.

Anna is also a passionate violin teacher and community music facilitator.  Please contact for more details.
